4016 Carya Drive
Raleigh, NC 27610

Speaker: Earl Ijames, NC Museum of History

Earl Ijames has spent more than 20 years researching and documenting the roles of enslaved and free people of color who served in various capacities in the Confederacy and the Confederate Army. He will describe his research methods, how one record led to another, and how he found primary sources which substantiate his findings. Due to the political nature of the project, he found multiple primary sources for each soldier. He will display several artifacts that he used in his research. He will show a few scenes from his documentary "Colored Confederates and U.S. Colored Troops" and will have autographed copies of the DVD of this 75-minute film available for purchase. His talk coincides with the new Reconstruction Exhibit at the NC Museum of History.

Mr. Ijames is a 1991 graduate of North Carolina State University with a degree in history and minors in economics, English and African-American Studies. He became curator at the North Carolina Museum of History in 2008 following 14 years as a researcher and photographic and reference archivist with the North Carolina State Archives.
